The Bouquinistes of Paris

Stroll along the Seine River in Paris on days of tolerant weather, near to the Sainte-Chapelle and Notre Dame cathedrals by Point Neuf, and you’ll see many vintage dark green book stands set atop the centuries old riverbank walls.

Each little stand holds many books mixed with magazines, graphic novels, posters, postcards, music, and much in ephermera mostly vintage in French language. You’ll find much treasure within, of wonderous literature and art of historical variety in these antiquatiarian stalls.

These are The Bouquinistes of Paris, a long-standing tradition of used indie booksellers in operation dating back to the 16th century.

Each stand regulated with the city of Paris, limited to four “boxes” with strict size and placement regulations. There are over 200 stands, holding hundreds of thousands of mostly vintage French language books of every subject. You’ll find much in modern day creative works as well.

Personally, The Bouquinistes of Paris is among my favorite features of this great city. I love book and magazine stands, and sadly I feel these are vanishing in the big cities I frequent. To see the many here in the most beautiful of city walkways, preserving history much like the surrounding architecture, sculptures, museums Paris is known for, is refreshing.

I bought two thin small books , and an old photograph, something I would like to share in a separate found treasures post for another day.

I shall certainly return and set aside more time to browse. You should too!

All great adventures begins with small steps

I love a good bookstore, especially with a staircase that leads to room with more books.

One favorite staircase is from Ophelia Books in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle, located one block north of the Fremont Bridge. It’s got a nice collection of used books at very decent prices.

But the coolest aside from the books, is that awesome staircase noticeable at entrance. It’s a narrow spiral, and important that you watch your step going down. Take it downstairs, then browse their science fiction, mystery, lots of non-fiction books of many subjects.

I was there recently, filling in time before a meeting. I found some good books on journalism history, and The Dictionary of Science Fiction Places. I would take the past and future with me, back up the spiral staircase. I will travel this way again.

And now I ask. Do you have any favorite used book stores with cool book cases? Or just favorite book stores? Please share with me in the comments!

May the 4th be with you, always

Another busy day today, but I took some time to enjoy this May 4th tradition that is now Star Wars Day.

I spent my lunch and later evening reading a some short stories out of Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, a stellar anthology of 40 short stories from 40 writers, focusing on the viewpoints of non-main characters present during the events of Star Wars: a New Hope. I really love this idea, and enjoying pretty much every story so far (halfway through). I highly recommend for anyone who loves Star Wars, or just enjoys a good short story where anyone in a galaxy far, far, away has a special story to share.

The day is almost over now, but I love Star Wars every day. It’s just one of the many great things that binds us together. and inspires me to keep adventuring. And remember…

Book Sale Shenanigans

Woah, look at the all the books!

This, being the highlight of my winter end weekend, at the annual Friends of the Seattle Public Library Book Sale. This was my fourth year in attendance, now held at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. Over 100,000 items, including Music CD, movie DVDs, audiobooks, vinyl records, and many, many books.

Many, many people joined in this massive treasure hunt. Many of them resellers, for which there are sure profits. Others, treasure hunters looking for rare finds. Some just like the cheap thrills and the joy of finding such. I can’t resist, especially at the $1.00 to $4.00 prices for each item.

So here, are some sights up close inside the massive hullabaloo…

Rare Books!

Half my catch, mostly comics and graphic novels. The other half contained mostly larger books and hardcovers (mostly odd fiction, biographies, and history).

Good fun, though I will probably not get around to reading many of these anytime soon.
