Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse

The above shot is from about 9:15 AM,  in Seattle, Washington. The occurrence is slightly after the totality of this night’s Super Blood Wolf Moon eclipse, a rare occurrence with the combination of the following things…

A “Supermoon,” which happens at its closest point to Earth during its elliptical orbit. This appears to be slightly bigger and brighter in the sky than a “normal” full moon, best shown in the early rise and set.

The “Blood Moon,” which is the red color from the wavelength of light from the Earth’s atmosphere putting just enough sunlight onto the mostly dark lunar surface.

The “Wolf Moon,” which a traditional name from early North American history (likely given by native tribes, and carried on by the colonists, I think) was given to this first full moon of this midwinter time, as wolves would howl loudly for this night.

All that came together on this one special night, for which will not occur again in this combination for another 18 years.  This phenomenon was worth viewing on this chilly night and lucky for the clouds from past nights not interrupting.

The Super Blue No-Moon Eclipse

Stupid cloud cover…

So, I got up early this morning at 4:30 am, and headed to the Seattle waterfront (on Pier 66, upper level), to see the once in a lifetime combo of the Moon being a full Super, Blue, and Lunar Eclipse. The sight would have been amazing, given the reflection of the Elliot Bay waters and possible surrounding clouds.

Sadly, the distant cloud layer was too thick and overbearing, hogging the vision to itself. You could see a little glow from the moonlight above the mountains, and that was all for the duration until Moonset. The air was cold but shared nearby with other disappointed persons. We stared, and made the most of the moment, talking and chuckling at teasing of reddish moonlight.

Well, there will be more rare happenings to behold, or not. But what matters is that I was ready for either.

On a plane trip earlier today, to San Diego..

Almost fell asleep..then the corner of my eye caught the striking majesty of Mt. Rainer from above. Oh, such a sight to behold! Took the pic and went back to sleep. The ride felt peaceful as I eventually woke up to the Full Moon above San Diego.

How fantastic, I thought. To think, a new adventure ahead and such sights are just the beginning..

A wild Full Moon suddenly appears!

Lucky I had my trusty (yet damaged from a recent drop) camera handy to capture it. I managed to get a little of that early yellow, though the sky was much brighter than pictured. I had experiment much to get this right with no tripod. And here we are, with the Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch doing a photobomb.

Just a meaningless moment, is what can truly matter.

The days have been long, and busier than normal with an urgency for swift actions. Yet, I feel the damp murkiness of the days passed wearing me down. Reasons for this range, from trivial sports moments to the many tragic lives recently lost in faraway nations. I go on yet, with my daily errands and long work schedules. Moments between, call for a bite to eat and a sip of coffee. I check my social networks for the latest in birthdays and the opinions of others. Further out are lonely walks between work, the public transport, the post office, a therapeutic thrift store adventure. The rain and wind switch through the airspace above. I leave behind the scattering of leaves on the wet city streets. The days go on, while I continue my stepping through.

However today during a particular hour leaving my work, I halted for a moment on a small overpass. I look to the southwest over yonder, noticing a moment of time standing still. For now..no wind, no rain, no fresh news, and I have little immediate need of sustenance or destination. I simply see a beautiful crescent Moon shining above through a darkening sky. For much of the day, the light stayed out, yet coming back for the evening to give us locals one good moment before the night falls. I stood still, and let the moment sink in as I snapped a picture with my somewhat decent phone camera. The moment is good..

Then, the time became too cold and the moment ends. I move on..

The Almost Full Blue Moon (edit – just learned it’s not quite yet, but at 3:42 in the morning), now here in Seattle while the sun sets.

The evening is cooling from the hot summer day, with the temperature at 81 Fahrenheit now.

Here is a closer look..

The rise was east of Seattle’s Downtown, as seen from Kerry Park. 

The sunset was at about the same time. The city noticed…

Pictures of Today 6/6/15, Midnight Moon

 

 Shortly after Midnight, last night..

The Moon began as larger and yellowish on the horizon, from around yesterday at 11:40pm, huge but not quite full (waning). I just boarded the Washington State Ferry on Bainbridge Island, alone and bound for my trip back home in Seattle. The night air was warm, but staining wind from the slow trip out (from the moving boat or the night air, I could not tell).

So eventually after some texting, I reached for my camera and lens. I grumbled at the the sudden forgetting of my 300mm capable zoom lens during the start of my trip. Oh well, I have my small 50mm to work with, and a very rocky boat with winds outside. The trick to all this, is to simply enjoy the view and recognize the outside atmosphere as quiet and beautiful, for my next stop will be the Downtwon area..where construction noise and the occasionally smell of piss around the dock area will eventually disturb my senses. 

The trip was about 40 minutes, and here are some pictures I took for you..

I love a good Moon on a partly cloudy night, especially when it passes above some unusual architecture. 

I took this spontaneous shot through the very top of the Space Needle last night.  Good thing, I had my camera and zoom lens on me.

Sadly, my usual DSLR camera remains broken. Yet, here I am alone on the roof and I need to share this moment.

The clouds are moving fast, teasing the Moon and its piercing light; entertaining us who stand on rooftops in the night. It’s near full, this Moon (waxing gibbous) So, being stubborn in my moment, I capture with the little phone thing in my pocket (and slight editing later).  I hope you will love this moment with me, in every low-resolution detail.
